A perennial plant of the onion family with a distinctive flavour.
Chives are used extensively in salads, seasoning and for
garnishing foods.
Generally grown as an edging plant in a herb bed or in
containers, they will do well in any light well-drained garden
soil that has been manured for a previous crop of leaf or root
vegetables.
They grow in dense tufts and , once established they need not
be disturbed for 2 or 3 years.
Prepare for sowing by digging over the soil and apply a light
dressing of superphosphate. Sow seed thinly 1 cm deep in
rows and do not thin out seedlings.
When the young plants are well established the leaves may be
cut as wanted throughout the growing season.
