Rubus idaeus ‘Chilcotin’
10 x loose canes
Raspberry ‘Chilcotin’ is a heavy yielding summer fruit variety that grows up to 2m high. The tall canes will harvest around December, and if maintained correctly, they will produce a secondary crop around March. Keeping the canes moist and fertilised will help with this process. Raspberries grow best in cool to cold climates and like a rich, well-drained soil. Raspberry ‘Chilcotin’ has excellent disease resistance.
PLANTING: Prefers full sun to part shade in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the roots. Cover with soil and water in well. Some well rotted compost or very old animal manure will be beneficial.
GROWING: Mulch well to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, but keep away from the trunk to prevent rot. Apply fertiliser to soil when growth begins. Canes that have died or beared fruit in the past season should be cut down at ground level during winter. Water well during dry periods and protect from strong winds.
HARVESTING: Fruit is ripe when it is well coloured and comes easily off the stem. Eat fruit fresh or add to fruit salads. Raspberries freeze well and make excellent jams and jellies.
