It is eaten by grating or chopping finefor salads, or cooked as a vegetable in cubes.It grows better in good loamy soil and full sun, but will also toleratepoorer soils and part shade. Like most crops best results are obtainedwhen there is a constant summer moisture. It will grow in damperparts of the garden.Sow in a rich soil with plenty of compost or well rotted animal manure.Seed can be sown in a seed bed and transplanted when 8-10cmtall, or sown directly into the ground. The seed is slower to emergethan most vegetables.Plant out 20cm apart in rows 45cm apart. Use continuous applicationsof fish emulsion or seaweed fertiliser during the growing season.
